Trapper John M.D. Cast

Series Description

Trapper John M.D. was a 60 minute medical drama series on CBS about a former Korean War Army surgeon who became the Chief of Surgery at San Franscico Memorial Hospital. He was joined by a young doctor named "Gonzo" Gates who had served in the Army as a Vietnam War surgeon. Their similar pasts caused them to form a close bond. Gonzo even reminded Trapper John of himself at an earlier age. Along with a colorful cast of doctors, nurses, and other hospital employees, they did their best to heal the wounds of their patients.

Trapper John M.D. Trivia

Trapper John, M.D. was a "spin-off" of the series, "M*A*S*H". It was inspired by the character, "Trapper John McIntyre" who had appeared on that series while serving as a young doctor in Korea during the war. The series is a "spin-off" in the loosest terms, however, as Trapper John was played by "Wayne Rogers" on "M*A*S*H" and by "Pernell Roberts" on this series.

Ironically, Wayne Rogers turned down the opportunity to reprise his role as Trapper John because he didn't ever want to play a doctor again and then very shortly thereafter he took the role as Doctor Charley Michaels on the series, "House Calls"! House Calls was a comedy series and Trapper John, M.D. was a drama series. Maybe that's what made the difference?

For the final two seasons of Trapper John, M.D., Trapper's son, Doctor John "J.T." McIntyre joined the hospital staff as an intern. He was played by actor Timothy Busfield who you might know better as "Cal Shanley" on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" or as reporter "Danny Concannon" on "The West Wing".

Trapper John drove three different cars during the show's run. They were a 1978 Mazda RX-7, a 1980 Dodge Mirada CMX-360, and a 1983 Cadillac SeVille.

One of the strangest things about the show was that Gonzo lived in big, huge, broken down RV that was parked in the hospital's parking lot. He had even named the ugly thing, "The Titanic". It sure did make it easy for Trapper John to find him in an emergency though!

Pernell Roberts began his career by singing in local USO shows while he was still in high school. During his early year trying to make it as an actor, he took jobs with steady paychecks as a butcher, a forest ranger, and a railroad riveter. Eventually he got a huge break by getting the role as the oldest son of Ben Cartwright on the mega hit series, "Bonanza". Just as that series reached the top of the ratings and he had become beloved by fans, he quit the series because he felt that the scripts and directing on Bonanza were not up to his standards! Fans and industry insiders alike were flabbergasted! The writers wrote their scripts in a way that always left the door open for Roberts to return but he never changed his mind even though Bonanza went on for another eight seasons! After that, his career floundered as he failed to secure anything more than bit parts in movies although he did get a few big parts in a few TV miniseries and kept his face recognizable to the public by doing guest-star work on numerous TV series. That was a good move and most certainly led to his starring role on Trapper John, M.D. Roberts also hosted a series titled, "FBI: The Untold Stories" after Trapper John, M.D. ended.

In addition to his role as Gonzo on Trapper John, M.D., Gregory Harrison has also starred as "Logan" on the series, "Logan's Run", "Michael Sharpe" for one season on "Falcon Crest", and as "John Loring" on "Safe Harbor".
