Series Description:

The Spongebob Squarepants cartoon show was a 30 minute kids cartoon series on Nickelodeon about a boy sponge who lives under the sea with his undersea friends and other characters. Spongebob always has the best of intentions but typically ends out in a jam or an embarrassing situation of some kind.

Spongebob Squarepants Trivia:

Spongebob's name was originally going to be Spongeboy but that had to be changed because comic book creator Bob Burden had already trademarked that name for a character he had created of a little boy cut out of a flat sponge.

Spongebob Squarepants takes place in the underwater city "Bikini Bottom" which is located in the Pacific Ocean beneath the real life island of Bikini Atoll. Series creator Stephen Hillenburg has said that Bikini Bottom was mostly based on the city of Seattle, Washington. Spongebob lives at 124 Conch Street. Mr. Krabs lives at 3541 Anchor Way.

It's not surprising that Hillenburg came up with the idea for a cartoon show that takes place under the sea because he was educated as a marine biologist. He also had a very unique way of pitching the series to Nickelodeon. He showed the executives a fish tank and described the creatures in the tank. Then he put a drawing of Spongebob into the tank and said, "This is SpongeBob, the star of your new show". The original idea for the series came when Hillenburg was a director on the series, "Rocko's Modern Life". He showed a comic book that he had written in college to Rocko's writer "Martin Olson". Olsen thought it was terrific and told Hillenburg that he should change it to an underwater cartoon show.

Tom Kenny who provides the voice of Spongebob has stated that he got the idea for the voice after hearing an angry dwarf yelling.

The first words ever spoken by Spongebob were, "May I take your order"?

SpikeTV wanted to air an adult version of Spongebob on their network but Nickelodeon would not sell them the rights.

Mr. Krab is renowned for his penny-pinching ways. In fact, his boat is named the "SS Cheapskate".

Spongebob is ambidextrous. He has been shown to be writing with both hands.

As of this writing (2010), Spongebob Squarepants is the highest rated show on Nickelodeon!
