Series Description

Southland is a 60 minute crime drama series on NBC for its first season and then on TNT starting in the second season. It concentrates less on police procedures and more on the work and personal relationships of members of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Southland Trivia

In order to ensure that Southland's prop police badges could never be used to impersonate a real badge they were redesigned. The real-life ones have the officer's rank at the top and the words "Los Angeles" above an image of City Hall on the bottom. The prop badges switched the rank to the bottom and the rest to the top.

Southland lost its time slot on NBC due to the controversial (temporary) replacement of Jay Leno with Conan O'Brien as host of "The Tonight Show" when NBC developed a new show for Leno.

While the second season of Southland aired on TNT, those episode were produced by NBC. TNT bought the rights to the first season's episodes which had aired on NBC and they also bought the second season episodes to air on their network.

TNT made some major changes to Southland when they began their own production of a third season. They cut the cast, crew and production budget. They also loosened up on the censoring of language that was heavy at NBC. On TNT only the very worst profanity would be censored, giving the series a more realistic feel.
