In the Pretty Little Liars books, Alison dissapears prior to the girls entering the eighth grade. That's a full three years before the beginning of the storyline on the TV show. On the show it is stated that Alison disappeared just one year earlier.

Just in case you think that some of the scenes look familiar on Pretty Little Liars, it may be due to the fact that many of them are shot on the town of Stars Hollow lot from the series, "Gilmore Girls".

Alexis Denisof ("Angel") was originally cast as Byron and Jean Louisa Kelly (Yes, Dear) as Ella but were replaced by Chad Lowe and Holly Marie Combs in time to shoot the first broadcast episode.
