Colgate Comedy Hour

Colgate Comedy Hour cast

Series Description

The Colgate Comedy Hour was a 60 minute sketch, musical, comedy series on NBC with rotating hosts including Eddie Cantor, Abbott & Costello, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Ed Wynn, Donald O'Conner, Ethel Merman, and Frank Sinatra! Other stars hosting only a few episodes included Bob Hope, Tony Martin, Judy Canova, Jack Carson, Jimmy Durante and Fred Allen.

Broadcast History

The Colgate Comedy Hour was broadcast on NBC from 8:00PM to 9:00PM on Sunday nights during its entire run.

Colgate Comedy Hour Trivia

NBC took on quite a challenge when they put the Colgate Comedy Hour on at 8PM on Sunday nights in 1950! CBS had the (nearly) invulnerable TV personality "Ed Sullivan" on in the same time slot with the variety series, "Toast of the Town" which had already been a ratings dynamo for more than 2 years!

Most of the hosts of the Colgate Comedy Hour had previously starred on their own radio shows! The few who never had their own show on the radio had made numerous guest appearance on other shows.

It is known that Woody Allen made his TV debut on the Colgate Comedy Hour but no ones seems to know which episode it was!

The Colgate Comedy Hour was nominated for Emmys in 1952, 1953, and 1954. In 1952 and 1953, it lost out to the Sid Caesar classic series, "Your Show of Shows". In 1954, "Omnibus" won the award. In 1954, "Donald O'Connor" did win an Emmy for the series, however, in the "Best Male Star of Regular Series" category!

Over the years there have been many rumors that the November 23, 1953 episode of the Colgate Comedy Hour was the first TV episode to be broadcast in color. Actually, the first color show was June 25, 1951 on the CBS series, "Premiere". It starred Ed Sullivan and Arthur Godfrey. It was only available in four cities and on a very small number of TV sets that used the non-standardized CBS color system. The January 1, 1954 Rose Bowl Parade was the first show broadcast nationally using a standard signal that could be seen on about 200 RCA prototype color TVs and also on the 23 million existing black & white TVs (with a black & white picture, of course). It was September 12, 1959 before "Bonanza" became the first TV series to start regularly broadcasting in color. I personally remember that fondly because my parents bought a brand new color TV just because of Bonanza! By the way, the color episode of the Colgate Comedy Hour mentioned above was a test and the series was never broadcast in color again!

Jerry Lewis met famed actor Christopher Walken as a young boy while hosting the Colgate Comedy Hour. Jerry encouraged Christopher to pursue a career in show business!

One of Norman Lear's first big jobs was as a writer for the Colgate Comedy Hour. He went on to be the creator of some of TV's biggest hit shows including "Maude", "Good Times", "All in the Family", and "Sanford and Son".
