Series Description

The TV show is a 60 minute competitive reality series on UPN (now the CW Network) about young women who compete for the title of "America's Next Top Model", to be represented by the Ford Modelling Agency, to appear in a fashion spread in Elle magazine, and win a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl! The cameras follow them 24 hours per day to capture every moment of their change from pretty but unprofessional young women into modelling superstars. They learn how to properly perform on a catwalk and in photo shoots, optimize their makeup and dress, and perfect their bodies through physical conditioning.

Trivia

Tyra Banks was the first African-American woman to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition. She has stated that it was difficult for her to succeed as a model because Naomi Campbell, who was more famous at the time, used her influence to keep Tyra out of fashion shows. She and Naomi have since made peace with each other. A couple of the photographer shoots on America's Next Top Model resulted in some medical emergencies. Contestant Sara Albert hurt her back in the "Falling Fairy-Tales" shoot and Cassandra Watson got a frostbitten hand by holding a scoop of ice cream in her hand in the "Nude Candy-Coated" shoot. Both had to visit the emergency room over the injuries!

Tyra Banks was so impressed with Janice Dickinson's book, "No Lifeguard of Duty: The Accidental Life of the Worlds First Supermodel" that she called Janice personally to invite her to be a judge on America's Next Top Model.
