American TV audiences were treated to the first look at Communist China in over 20 years when President Richard M. Nixon became the first U.S. President to visit that nation. The main purpose of the visit was to improve U.S.-Chinese relations in order to put pressure on the Soviet Union to enter into serious arms control negotiations and it worked!
Ironically however, the Soviet Union did not fall until years later when President Ronald Reagan accelerated arms production and research which resulted in a spending war that pretty much bankrupted the Soviets. |

60 years ago today on February 26, 1952 an episode of "I Love Lucy" was broadcast on the radio in anticipation of running an entire series on the radio. Twenty episodes of the TV version of the show had already aired by that date. Apparently there were not enough fans willing to listen on the radio as no further episodes were broadcast. The TV series however continued for six seasons and 180 episodes becoming an icon of U.S. sitcoms!
