Terra Nova TV Series from Steven Spielberg      Sun Oct 17, 2010 10:51 am Reply with quote

A project currently in production may have the potential to at least partially satisfy the insatiable appetite that television audiences have for science fiction. Recent hit shows like Battlestar Galactica, Heroes and others haven't seemed nearly adequate to satisfy that hunger.[/center

Luckily, science fiction fans may find themselves in sci-fi heaven in May of 2011 when Steven Spielberg, Brannon Braga and Dreamworks bring an action packed, special effect extravaganza to the FOX Network. The Terra Nova TV series premiere promises to blow away all previous sci-fi series of television history! With a production cost projected to run as high as $20 million for the premiere and $10 million per episode thereafter, Terra Nova may look at lot more like a theatrical film than a TV show. If costs reach that figure, the debut episode will be the most costly in television history!

Imagine a combination of Spielberg's hit film, "Jurassic Park" and its dinosaurs with a heavy dose of the 1960s time travel series "Time Tunnel" where present day explorers travel back in time thrown in for good measure. Then add a dash of the 1990s series, "Earth 2" about colonizing a strange new world and you might start to get a feel for the heights that the Terra Nova TV show could reach. But we aren't done yet! Terra Nova also has the advantage of present day computer generated special effects as only Dreamworks can provide. Just think back to the realism of Spielberg's Jurassic Park movies and then consider the fact that it has been a decade since the last of that series was filmed! Computer technology has grown tremendously since that time.

Terra Nova also promises to be action packed with two experienced "24" executive producers, Brannon Braga and Jon Cassar! In addition to all of his other talents, Braga also produced three Star Trek series, Threshold and Flash Forward! Of course, it would be difficult to put wild prehistoric jungles, dinosaurs and human beings together in one setting without encountering action, adventure and suspense. When considering the talent involved in this project, suspense and a fast moving storyline almost seems to be a certainty!

The most enticing possibility is that if Terra Nova does become a mega hit series, perhaps more science fiction programs will be produced! The high costs involved in getting this genre right may become less worrisome to networks if a major network hits it big with one in the ratings! We who adore really good sci-fi can only hope that will be the outcome.

Terra Nova will star Jason O'Mara, most recently seen as Detective Sam Tyler on "Life on Mars", Shelley Conn from the BBC series "Mistresses" and Stephen Lang who most fans will recognize as the hard nosed Colonel in the movie, "Avatar".
