Beware of Bogus Email Attachments!      Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:58 am Reply with quote

The spammers have shifted into high gear! I have been inundated with emails that appear to be from people I know that tell me to open an attached file. In all cases, the person who appears to have sent the message did not send it.

I have actually received that spam from people claiming that my account at this forum has been suspended and the only way to recover it is to open the attached file. Obviously, there is no way I sent that message to myself.

Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do to stop this. It's very easy for anyone to make an email look like it's coming from someone else.

Be assured that no one at CrazyAboutTV.com will ever ask you to open an attached file.

These files are usually simply ads for Viagra or some such thing but this is also an easy way for hackers to get you to download a virus into your computer.

I heartily recommend that you never open an attached file unless the sender has explained what it is, assures you that it's virus free, and you verify it with the sender first by some means other than online.

Feel free to simply delete any email from CrazyAboutTV.com with an attached file as we did not send it.

It's unbelievable to me that someone who can figure out how to write a program that makes your computer break can't use those talents for something more productive!

My computer got so badly infected a couple of years ago that it would have cost more to repair it than to replace it. Luckily, I was still young enough that my dad bought me a new one but he shouldn't have had to pay for somebody else's nonsense either!

I didn't realize though that someone could send an email with somebody else's email address as the sender! That's good to know. I just won't open any attached file unless I talk offline with the sender first.

Thanks for the warning!

Becky

I also wanted to tell everyone that I had a private message here when I signed in today but when I went to read it there was no message actually there, it just said there was. I assume that some spammer probably left it and when they caught him and banned him the message disappeared.

If not and any of you sent me a private message, I didn't get it.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure why that happens but my guess is that either you are correct or it's something else like that. The sender was registered for a few hours and sent out private message scams and then the forum automatically deletes all private messages when I delete a user.
