The actual name of the ship was the "SS Constitution". It was the ship that Lucy, Ricky, Ethel, and Fred would be taking to Europe where Ricky's band would be touring. The "European Vacation" episodes started with episode #139, "Staten Island Ferry" and ran through the rest of season 5.
The SS Constitution was actually an ocean liner owned by American Export Lines that was commissioned in 1951 and decommissioned in 1995. She sank just north of the Hawaiian Islands while being towed to the scrape yards. sailed on the New York-Genoa-Naples-Gibraltar route to Europe.
People often confuse the SS Constitution with the USS Constitution which is the oldest commissioned ship still operating.
Besides taking the I Love Lucy gang to Europe, the SS Constitution also transported Grace Kelly and her entire wedding party to Monaco for her wedding to Prince Rainier and she also was the ship that served as the backdrop for the 1957 film, "An Affair to Remember" starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. |
