| The Wackiest Ship in the Army Wed Sep 27, 2006 4:21 pm |

Hello,
I hope someone can help me with the name of this TV show. A Navy (I think) crew was given an old ship (a schooner) and went undercover during WWII in the Pacific. Whenever a Japanese fighter flew over them, everybody was ordered to "smile and wave".
Please help! I'm going bonkers!
Thanks |

The TV show you're talking about is "The Wackiest Ship in the Army". It aired during the 1965/66 season for 29 episodes.
The government of New Zealand gave the United States a 70-year-old schooner (for who knows what reason) and the U.S. Army used it to put spies behind enemy lines in the Pacific during World War II.
It starred Gary Collins who was a young Navy Lieutenant in charge of the ship while it was cruising from one assignment to another and Jack Warden who played an Army Major who commanded the crew while in port during an operation. The inter-service and personal rivalry between those two because of the "split" command caused conflict which alway came out OK in the end, of course.
